"CopperGarden®" Cataplana Casserole 18 cm, Smooth

The Cataplana is a versatile and especially popular universal cooking device in southern Europe for baking, frying, and cooking. This unique cooking tool originally comes from Portugal, where it is traditionally used for baking in the oven, on a gas stove, or over an open fire. It offers a wonderfully versatile shape with many possibilities in modern kitchens as well as for cooking over an open flame and in the great outdoors. You will love it.

Historical Background: The shape of the Cataplana originally stems from hunting and horseback riding. Thanks to the lockable half-shells, a rider could easily carry their cooking device by their side on a belt or saddle. The material is lightweight and practical, able to withstand numerous bumps and knocks that can be easily re-shaped. Due to the antibacterial and antiviral properties of copper, you can safely and sustainably transport your hunted, fished, or foraged food in the Cataplana.

The two half-shells conveniently clip together like a bag and are still very well-suited for modern camping cooking. You can sear, simmer gently, steam, and even bake directly in the embers with the Cataplana. At the end of the cooking time, the Cataplana can be opened, divided into two parts, and used as a plate.

Note: The images may show other versions and sizes. Here, you will receive the 18 cm size in smooth design, which we recommend for cooking for one to two persons, depending on what you are preparing.

Healthy Cooking in the Cataplana

Our tip for a healthy life, long-lasting copper pots, and fun in the kitchen: use only good oils and add some right from the beginning to your Cataplana. A copper pot should not be heated empty.

Important to Know: At around 232 degrees Celsius, the tin coating may begin to melt. At 250 degrees, the copper can warp.

A normal stovetop can reach temperatures of 400u00b0, a glass-ceramic cooktop can get up to 600u00b0, and a gas flame or fire can exceed 1,000u00b0!

Donu2019t be afraid! During normal cooking, frying, and baking, you will never reach these temperatures.

Watch for the Smoke Point. Itu2019s simple: if the oil is smoking, itu2019s too hot! You can harm your health long before your Cataplana suffers any damage.

At 175u00b0, frying and deep-frying become unhealthy! Acrylamide forms. Even high-temperature oils can burn by 200 degrees maximum. There is only one exception: artificially highly refined sunflower oils can withstand extreme temperatures above 230 degrees.

Add your food to the pot before the oil burns! Your health will thank you, and so will your Cataplana!

Another Tip: You donu2019t need a thermometer for frying. Use a wooden cooking spoon and hold the end in the hot oil. If fine air bubbles appear from the handle, the oil is hot enough for frying and sautu00e9ing. If it starts to smoke, itu2019s way too hot.

What if it happens? If you accidentally heat your copper pot above 232u00b0, the tin may melt. It is 100% safe for health, even if it ends up in your food. Your body will simply excrete it. If necessary, the pot can be re-tinned.

If you expose your copper pot to temperatures above 250 degrees, it may warp. This is generally not a problem, but when cooking on an electric cooktop, the warped bottom may cause heat transfer losses.

One more important note: Copper transfers all temperatures very quickly u2013 including to the handle! Please use an oven mitt or cloth when handling the pot.

This Cataplana is a very high-quality cooking device. With a bit of love, this wonderful Cataplana will quickly bring you joy and accompany you for a lifetime.

Copper is a living metal and will change color with use. You can polish away these marks of life, but we recommend against it and suggest letting the pot age gracefully.

Tin can become dull with use. The original silver shine transitions to a matte gray. If you wish, you can re-tin it at any time. This will cost around 40 euros for a pot of this size, but itu2019s not necessary as long as the coating is not heavily worn or scratched.
